Quick Photoshop help needed!

I'm making a collage of some pictures I took. I'd like the background to be black to make the pictures stand out more. So far I've set up all the pictures in the right places and each one is on an individual layer so I can remove them at will.
How do I get the background to be black though?

Ok, another bit of help needed please.

I've compiled the collage of about 12 JPEG's, each was on a separate layer. I've saved this large Photoshop file and also Flattened the layers and saved that too as a *.PSD file.

I want to get the file printed out but Photobox can't see the .PSD file and Photoshop won't give me the option to save it as a JPEG? Its a large file, about 35Mb. Any ideas?
