I am going to view a car this evening. Despite my best efforts my friend, she wants a Vauxhall Corsa. The car we are going to view is a Vauxhall Corsa Club 16V Auto W-Reg 2000 1.2L with 64K miles. It is a 5-door on for £1400. It has MOT until Nov 2010 and tax until end of April.

According to parkers the price guide is:
Private Good £980
Private Poor £600

It seems quite high, given that 5 months ago, i managed to get her a W-Reg 2000 Honda Civic 1.6i SE Auto with 54K miles for £1250, which had 10 months MOT and 11 months Tax. She has unfortunately written off that car.
What is the max you would pay for this Corsa? Personally I would pay max £950
Thanks in advance :)

haha i don't think the seller will go for that low a price.. I don't know why she likes vauxhall corsa so much. I think a nissan micra would be much better or if she would go up one more size up another honda civic.

Bizarely enough, current Glass's part exchange valuation for that car is £1050. Parkers have it undervalued for private sale and no private seller will discount the car by 1/3rd.

"Bizarely" because Fox is right. It's Corsa B. It is, with exception of Ford Escort, the worst car in the world. And 10 year old Corsa in Club trim and 1.2 engine with automatic gear box it shouldn't be worth more than £500.

considering the cost of other hatchbacks of that age that you can buy, and the price guides from parkers etc that is quite overpriced, tell her not to be afraid of walking away and buying a different car - nothing says she has to have that one.

I bought my W reg 2000 Corsa B 1.0 Envoy with 30k on the clock 3 years ago for £900. Seems a bit steep.

Corsa Bs are not worth any more than 1k and many sellers will knock off a 1/3.

Some won't, but you don't ask....etc

we walked away from this one, it was not in the best condition.. and the guy wanted £1250.. And theres no way i would have let her pay that.
Is the next version corsa (2000- 2003) any/much better?

From personal experience, I have a lot of friends with models about that age and they have had much more grief from them than I've ever had with my Corsa B. I might just have been lucky and got a well looked after one mind you. Common fault seems to be the gear linkages.

she after an automatic.. so will gear linkage problems be related to that.
I recommended to her nissan micras or toyota yaris.. but she does not like the look or shapes of them

Not sure about that I'm afraid. Think it's a common fault with manuals, don't really know anything about automatics.

How about a Ford Fiesta? I'm sure you could pick up one of the 1.3 Automatics for around 1000-1500.

Unless she has a medical condition or an auto only license do NOT buy a cheap Auto at this end of the market. Seriously reduces your choice of cars and they are generally quite rubbish.
