Hey guys

Getting a PS3 on release, and hoping to run it through my 205BW (HDCP so will be alright)

So going to pick up a HDMI to DVI cable, seen these around fairly common and unexpensive, question I have though, is I understand HDMI carries the audio signal as well, so how will I be able to get audio from the PS3 if I use this cable

Is there an optical out on the PS3, or is this disabled while using HDMI?

If anyone knows, can you please let me know how it would work

I have googled it but not really come across anything

Cheers

Sorry about editing so much I've just noticed that there is a AV Output on the back of the PS3 you might/should be able to use that, unhooking the composite video (yellow) and disabling HDMI sound. Infact you might even be able to use Component out that'll carry 720p/1080i fine.

Keep the HDCP in mind, that should only apply to movies though.

There is a Dolby Digital 5.1 optical out connector. You can choose whether you want the audio to go via HDMI or via this optical port in the system's settings.

For a DVI connection, the optical port is the only way of getting sound.

Sorry to revive my own thread

Just about to buy the HDMI to DVI cable, got a bit of a problem though theres so many different choices and I dont know which I am supposed to get

HDMI A/M 19P to DVI 18P +1P/M
HDMI A/M 19P to DVI 24P +5P/M

And a couple more which are just vice versas of those combinations pretty much

Anyone know what the difference is and which I need

Is the P part the number of pins? If so, how many pins are their in a monitor DVI connection?

I think 18P DVI cables are single link DVI and 24P DVI cables are dual-link DVI.

I think the difference being that dual-link dvi can support resolutions higher than 1080p, so I assume not necessary for PS3 but google didn't offer any enlightenment as to whether the ps3 needs dual or single link dvi.

does that mean that if i get a HDMI to DVI cable, I'll be able to play games through my non HDCP monitor?

Or am i stuck with component on the 19" TV until I can upgrade my monitor?

You'd still need a HDCP enabled dvi socket, as hdmi is effectively dvi with a differenct connector type and the ability to carry digital audio.
