Hi guys...

What is the best way to connect:

• HDTV
• Sky+ HD
• Blu-Ray / Home Cinema Surround Sound

I'm thinking HDMI from Sky to TV, HDMI from Blu-Ray to TV and then optical from Sky to Blu-Ray just for the audio to use the surround speakers?

I know some sort of fancy AV receiver is probably best but well, that'd be more money for no extra functionality...

It all hinges on what inputs your receiver has, but what you've said there is about right if you've just got a basic system. SkyHD boxes can't do 5.1 via HDMI so the optical cable is a requirement anyway.

I've got this basic setup (though with DVD rather than Blu-ray) but also have a 360 and Wii hooked up. I run the HDMI's all to the TV (scart for the wii), then take optical from TV to surround sound, that way I can get everything through the surround sound (even if not in 5.1 for each device).

Works for me anyhow.

nope no extra fuctionality at all only better sound quality, more connections, better processing of inputs, one remote, one central menu for all your devices.:p

save the pennies, invest in one, and all your problems are solved. cant actually live without mine now.

Depends on whether your TV can output 5.1 via optical, many can't. If that's the case, you'd be better off with an optical switch.
