Quick Q: ECC REG ram in non-ECC Mobo?

No, they are physically the same, just standard DDR DIMMS with the difference being the extra ECC chips.
I though I read somewhere that the ECC chips are 'bypassed' on a non-ECC mobo, but google isn't helping hence I'm asking the question here.
