Right, today I was going down the M40 towards birmingham (I think I was around Warwick but not 100% sure, it was poole to crewe so the exact location gets blurred) and I passed a completely white totally unmarked van on the grass verge that clearly had 2 cameras facing out of the back of it out of 2 small open areas of the back windows.

So, anyone any idea if that was a speed camera van? I've read they could be ANPR or specifically for bike speeding? I was doing an indicated 88ish and down to about indicated 80 when I saw it. Blah blah killing children etc but anyone any idea what it actually was? I've seen mobile camera vans before but at the very least they've had some yellow hatching and the whole safety camera partnership guff on the side?

it depends if you were trying to make me feel better or if you said "no its not a speed camera its definitely x" I don't really get what you're getting at tbh.

it was basically this without the markings

I did the same run as you last week, the only Police van I saw was on a bridge and was side on. It had markings. Dunno if it was for speeders or ANPR, I gather that they are mostly ANPR these days. Unfortunately if it was for speeding then I expect they got you before you spotted them and managed to slow down and they start to send NIPs for anything over 79.

It it had actual flaps to stick the cameras out of then it's probably speed related. ANPR vans generally just point the cameras through the glass but in theory glass could interfere with the speed reading, wheras for tax/insurance offences all they need to do is prove that the untaxed/uninsured vehicle was on a road on a given day.

No need for the coppers to sit in the cold if they don't have to for legal reasons.

My money is on ANPR.

I've seen plain vans matching your description here in South Warwickshire as part of the security clampdown they put on round the Bulldog Bash. The speed camera vans I've seen are clearly marked.

PK!

unmarked white vans with TWO cameras are usually ANPR

only one is needed to print a ticket, and they are usually marked up with "safety camera partnership" stickers.

with the ANPR vans, providing you've got Tax,Mot and Insurance you've nothing to worry about. There are usually police cars further up the road to chase any tax dodgers / people with no insurance.

I thought they had to legally be signwritten etc showing they we're camera vans?

They don't have to have signs up its just guidelines suggest this.
Perfectly legal to enforce speed limits without signs, although 99% of the time they have signs.

Warwickshire also have two unmarked gray Nissan Primera estates doing speed enforcement as well as a motorbike or two with cameras mounted on the back where the luggage thingie normally goes.
