Hi, my dad has got himself a 3series coupe and it's currently running on the stock run-flats. I've mentioned about swapping them for better tyres when they are due to be replaced, but due to there being no space saver he's not too keen. Obviously you can get the cans of tyre weld, but what ones are recommended? If he did get a flat and used the tyre weld does that then make a repair to the tyre impossible, or can they still be plugged as normal? Lastly what kind of mess does it make to the inside face of the alloy if used?

Many thanks

He has to weigh up the chances of ever needing a spare. In true style of jinxing myself, so watch for a 'OH CRAP' thread from me soon, despite having several punctures I've never once needed to use the spare wheel in my car - I've always been able to pump the offending tyre up, drive to a tyre place, and get the problem sorted.

Dumping runflats will transform the ride and handling of the car.

Ditch them and carry tyre weld. If the tyre is shredded, call the RAC, that's what you pay them for (if you do ;))

I've fone 400 miles this weekend on the run flats and I've found them to be OK. Obviously the ride in my Volvo must have been utterly appauling.

Might be worth having pressure sensors fitted if they're not already, so potential problems are spotted before they become a big problem.

A 12v compressor would also be a necessary acessory
