Quick Q; will Malware/virus' spread upon connecting a new HDD?

I had been using one 640GB HDD as my only HDD but i know have a SSD for my OS and a 1TB HDD for media and am wanting to use the 640GB for software/games but that is the one which i am sure is infected with something (although no matter what scans i do nothing is found). My question is if i connect my 1TB drive to it to copy all the files i want to keep is there a risk of what ever is on the 640GB is going to infect my 1TB drive and then subsequently infect my OS SSD?

I hope that makes sense and i'm sorry for the noob question, i know very little about how viruses work!

Like i said, i have scanned it with various pieces of anti-varius software and what not and checked running processes and didn't find much. I'll see how i get on, if something doesn't seem right i'll figure out a way round it an just do a fresh install.
