Hi Guys,

Just had my new BT line activated, this is the first time I've used ADSL as my parents have always been on Cable. I understand the initial connection speed is only 4mb, but Sky will increase it as they run tests on my line. I have a rather large backlog of downloads that I need to complete so I am wondering if I am likely to get a decent speed or if it's worth going back and using my parents 50mb. I am on Sky unlimited 20mb and ideally I'd like at least 16mb. Phone number is too new (?) for line checkers to work :(

Line stats are:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 7.5 db 3.7 db
Noise Margin 14.8 db 20.7 db

Thanks! :)

Thanks for the responses guys, this line quality thing is a pain, cable is nice and simple! :p

I have just checked my line and the stats have changed, note it is not plugged into the test socket yet. If you guys still think it is worth doing, I will give it a go. Looked up the local exchanged, its 156m away.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16382 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 8.0 db 3.7 db
Noise Margin 11.6 db 16.7 db

Thanks for the advice guys, got a fair few more days of line testing to go.

Currently at the following:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 22015 kbps 1157 kbps
Line Attenuation 8.0 db 3.7 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 9.3 db

I can download from Rapidshare but only at 1.4MB/sec, so something is not right as I should be getting over 2.4MB/sec, also speed tests show about 12MB. I am not too bothered as they are still testing the line but if I can get a proper 22MB I will be pretty chuffed :)

Running speed tests connects me at about 19mb, this is on wired, switching to wireless sees the speed drop to about 11mb. I literally have the laptop about 1ft away from the router when running the wireless speed test so I am pretty sure the wireless cannot be getting a load of interference which would cause it to drop 8mb.

I rang up Sky, not expecting much, they advised me that wireless is never as fast as wired and it is usual to drop so much speed. I pointed out my last network was had a Cable 20mb connection and I would receive 20mb over the wireless. Sky 'tech guy' suggested changing the chanel, I have tried 4 or 5 different channels, all yield the same results.

It is a Sky Router that only supports G mode but even that should be plenty for a 20mb connection, is it a case of the router being seriously rubbish or is there some massive interference? The wireless signal is full bars aka Excellent.

Any help would be appreciated!
