Hi

As title really, is it possible to use optical SATA drives on intel SATA controllers (mine is ICHr5) if they are in "non raid" mode?

I ask because i'm in need of a new writer and i'd prefer an SATA one (much tidier).

yes you can,i have on the ICHr8.

cheers :)

i had a feeling that was going to be the case, but thought i'd better check :)

Now i've just got to move one of my storage drives over to the promise controller ;)

Hold back a second there.
Just because the SATA controllers on the ICH8 support optical drives that doesn't magically mean that SATA controllers on the ICH5 would.
That is a 3 generation difference and a hell of a lot can happen in 3 generations.
I know that the very first Silicon Image SATA controllers didn't have ATAPI support.

You won't of course break anything by trying them, however don't assume they will just because the ICH8 does.

I took a bit of a gamble, knowing that the ICH5R can be set to legacy mode and it works fine with a Lite-on SATA DVDRW.

It also gives me dual layer and DVDRam abilities for the first time (you can probably guess my old drive was bought about 3 years ago from that statement;)).

Now to buy some cheap, but decent quality DVDR DL media next time i order disks (and some disks that are rated at more than 8x)
