if i have a board capable of running multiple gfx cards can i dump 2 in... say a 3870 and a 4870 can i use both or would i get errors?..

am thinking of getting a 42" screen to go with my 2 x 24" monitors for watching films etc and 1 card is no enuff for 3 outputs(afaik)

That will work fine but you won't be able to use Crossfire - for Crossfire they need to be the same generation.

hmmm bin reading some of the 4870 specs and they say they come with dual dvi and hdmi output so in theory can i run 3 monitors off 1 card? like the gainward 4870?

No - HDMI is over one of the DVI ports via a bundled adaptor, so you can still only connect two display devices.

"Built-in HDMI with 5.1 surround sound support"

taken of the description on website, wouldnt that imply that there is hdmi on the card. Since you cant transfer sound over dvi?
