Quick question about installing Orange Box...

How on earth do I install this on my second partition? Whenever I try to install it, it doesn't let me choose where to install. I want to use the cinematic mod which when installed is bigger than my windows partition (50GB, 20GB free), so I'd like to install the HL games on my Media partition (450GB). I got to choose where to install Steam - maybe if I installed Steam on my second partition, the games would follow that?

You answered your own question.

By default it puts it under the Steam folder so where ever that is the files will go.

Yeah valve think people have massive c drives when most peoples c partitions are tiny so they default the steam install to c : :rolleyes:

You can change where steam installs but not where the games go so its hardly by default is it?

Personally i think valve resepcts its gamers enough for them to understand that they can install Steam onto another partition. Im sorry if this was over your head iBot, but most of us can handle it fine.

And all installs default to C, its the only drive a games manufacturer can guarantee you have!

No it isnt. Most installs recently ive seen defaulting to which ever drive has the most space. Ive sorted install shields out for various mods and its easy peasy to do.

Its also possible to not have a c drive at all.

Yes, its called Linux....

Fact is 90% of people who own a PC have 1 drive, 1 partition, and everything goes into the Program Files folder...

Steam doesnt support linux (But a lot of games they sell have linux clients XD) Its possible to have a windows system without a c drive too.

I was going to doubt the other thing you said, 1 hard drive etc but looking at this

Technically, since iBot is being fussy about it, games installs default to your windows/program files drive, which may not neccesarily be C:\

As for the OP, yes, reinstall steam to the bigger drive. Games go into your steam folder, so it makes sense to install that where your games would go.

Most games probably do your right.

Installing Steam (and all other games for that matter) mean your saves etc are safe if you need to format your Windows drive. Plus, with Steam, all you have to do is reinstall it over the same directory and all your games come back without any installation needed.

Yeah thats why my c drive is only 20 gigs. My documents goes to my d and all my games on e. Windows goes = no data loss = winner

no need to re-install steam, just move the folder to another drive

steam is portable, then delete all your shortcuts to it (and games) or let ntfs find them for you

No they don't. Virtually all windows apps default to C: drive.

broadband is cheap and fast i dont see the point in backing up steam games
