hi,

was on the phone to my dad tonight who was having trouble with his internet (tiscali ). basically he was getting some errors when trying to connect earlier in the evening, but that seemed to be sorted by the time i phoned him back. anyway at one point as soon as he connected to the net his laptop locked up.

his laptop is an acer aspire 7520 (same as me) and he's using a speedtouch 330 modem with the latest vista drivers from the speedtouch website.

anyway, i told him to press caps lock to see if the caps light came on as that's my way of seeing if a pc has definitely locked up...and it had. a few seconds later i could hear a long, uninterupted beep down the phone coming from his laptop.

he switched it off, then on...rebooted and logged on to the net without any problems!

what i'd like to know though is what on earth was that beep!!? is it vista's way of saying "hellooooo, i've locked up! help!!" or could it be something altogether more sinister?

thanks in advance.

It just sounds like the keyboard buffer being overloaded. We - tech support for a notebook manufacturer - used to do that by holding down a key to confirm whether a keyboard issue was software or hardware.
