Hi guys,
Just wondered if some kind soul would be able to help me?
Ive just recieved a bill for £203 from 'Streamline.' Which is the name of the company i use to host my website. Its been up for around 4 years or so now, and ive noticed the costs steadily increasing over time. Ive had a shop around and a search on here and found 'TSOHOSTS' seem to have a good name, and looks like i could save a few quid by moving over to them.
The only thing i am worried about is the domain name. Streamline gave me a free domain name when i signed up with them all those years ago. How do i go about using it with a different company?
Thanks
Funky

Unless you own the domain name, which i suspect you don't (check by doing a WHOIS on the domain) then you haven't got many options other than to see if you can purchase the domain from Streamline, they will likely charge an arm for it, or purchase another.
If you do own the domain then it's a simple case of directing the domains DNS to the hosting companies nameservers; which do you do via the registrars control panel.

doesn't say a great deal, but I reckon streamline will charge you to move it...they deffo have the nameservers registered which you would need to change to get tsohost to host it...

You are by the looks of it. You should be able to change nameservers/DNS settings from within your Streamline control panel. Although I’m guessing you're wanting to move away from Streamline completely in which case you'll want to do a domain transfer from Streamline to Tsohost; although I’ve always been told to separate your domains from your hosting company so I use 1and1 (could also use 123-reg, namescheap etc See who is the cheapest) for my domains and Tsohost/Vooservers for my hosting.

Why separate hosting and nameservers? If one or the other goes down, so will your site, and nameservers rarely go down as there is built in redundancy...
Ohh and OP changing nameservers in your case is easy then...

The buggers wont allow me to log into my control panel, they just hit me with a 'pay here' form. Ive sent a support ticket asking how I can go about it. Ill let you know what they say.
Cheers guys.

A few years back I had the situation where the hosting company went belly up and it was a nightmare getting access to my domain names. Since then I’ve separated my domains from hosting and have been told by others to do this for this reason. Granted this situation is unlikely, but it happens and is another layer. Also gives a bit more freedom when changing hosts.

funkyphantom - Is that a bill for the services you've used or is that for services you are going to use? Likely to pay a percentage, ie: this month’s, if it's the latter and obviously the full amount if it's the former.

Ya its the bill for the next 2 years services mate. I knew it was due, because they kept reminding me my credit card had expired and i needed to renew it. Its a good job i didnt otherwise they would have taken £203 quid out of my account :P

granted if the hosting company goes down it's a pita but that's what nominet is for...
a few years back, I'd have thought about it, but not now
