quick question about my CPU cooler

i have an AMD Phenom II x4 955, and i have the stock fan attached to it. theres nothing wrong with it, but when im gaming, its REALLY loud. i cant see fan speeds when im gaming, but with 3 threads of prime95, and furmark running, it very quickly hits 6500RPM, and sounds like a small jet engine attempting to cool the processor. it sounds pretty much as loud as this when gaming too

however, before i see if i can get a new CPU cooler, i would like to know how much quieter it will be, so can someone tell me exactly how loud it is in decibels, because i cant find it anywhere

It depends on what cooler you buy to how many db's it will be.

Anyway any after market cooler will be quieter than a stock. The more you spend the quieter and cooler it will be. With exceptions.

Find the one you like the type in good stock vs what ever its called

i know that. i just want to have a number to compare the noise of whatever custom cooler i buy

eg, the Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler goes up to 29db, but i have literally no idea what improvement that will be

anything you buy is going to offer an improvement, go for a cooler with a 120mm fan as they push more air at lower rpms and are as a result quieter.

Any of the thermalright 120 clones will do the job well.

Can't find how love the stock one is.

If you get a after market one with a 120mm fan on it it will be quiet. You can also put and fan on it you like. So if you look at the 120mm fans i the fan section it will tell you how love they are. I no the yate loons screen very quiet and cheap

well, ive found a little way round the lack of info. i found the exact noise for my graphics card under load, which was 51db (Asus GTX 460 768MB). when i manually turned up the fan of the asus up to maximum it was no where near as loud as the processor fan (and the asus normally only goes up to 70% fan anyway)

seeing the venom is under 30db, i know im gonna get a really big reduction in noise if i change out the cooler, which is what i was after

The Venom is a much better option and will be fine;)
