Does Steam download game data on the fly while playing games?

Its just that I seem to be getting stuttering in Half Life 2 when a new sound is played, like speech.

No, it doesn't. All platform and game updates are started automatically when you sign in, and all custom maps/sounds etc are downloaded before connecting to the server to play.

i thought he meant, does is update other software while he is playing a game, perhaps i got the wrong end of the stick

mine does, i had trouble with the ship and dark messiah updating while playing HL2, had to turn them off.

think massiac meant as in while playing hl2 it can update, which it ovbiously cant.

Ok just tried playing through Lost Coast and I'm getting very bad stutturing whenever a new sound file is played. It actually pauses the game for a second or two. The game cache is defragmented and so is the Hard Drive.
