Hi guys, I have a PC built:

AM3 Phenom X3 720 2.8 GHz

4GB DDR3 1333 Memory

500GB SATA Hard Drive

AM3 MSI 770-C45 - DDR3 1600x4 770-C45 chipset

ATI HD 5770 1024MB

Elite 334 Black Midi Case

Ok so I've never really known much about PSU's at all, so is a 500W PSU enough for this setup? From what I've read, it would be, but, I just really wanna make sure before I make the purchase.

Thanks

I have ran a 550 hunkey on more than that lol so yeah I guess so. Give it a go... worst thats going to happen is you have to buy one anyway :)

That sounds dodgy. I'd advise a better one tbh. But yes, 500w is an appropriate amount of power anyway.

Hmm ok, thanks for the replies I think I'll stay away then, probably go for the Cooler Master one. Cheers.

The worse thing that could happen with a poor quality PSU is that it bursts into flames, burns your house down and kills everyone.

A more likely scenario is that when it dies it takes out your mobo, CPU and HDD.

Don't skimp on a PSU. If its "500 watts" and costs less than 30 quid then avoid.

Forget the stated wattage.

What you need to know is the Amperage on the 12v rail.

Cheap PSU's have next to no available amperage, or they have restrictions on the amount of simultaneous power that rail can supply.

The 12v rail is the critical rail as it powers your GPU, CPU, Hard Drive, DVD Drive etc.

A 500w Corsair would power that system easily, a 450w Corsair would too. A 500w CIT will most definitely not.

Buy a different PSU.

I worked in a PC repair shop and I have seen loads of dead cheap *** psu.. did they take out anything else? No.

Back in the day I seen my friends cheap ass psu die.. pop smell and thats it!

How many peoples pcs on here got taken out in the hyper explosive thread? I can't remember any tbh

Now what normally happens when a psu is not powerful enough for a system is it will just cut out.

Sure any thing is possible but the likely hood of it blowing up and taking out his components is ridiculously slim compared to what I say as in it will just cut out or die and be smelly (rest of components fine)!

I've seen and dealt with a few dead PSUs. Of the 20 or so I've dealt with 5 took out another component. Unlucky people? or really cheap PSUs?

Isn't that the point? A quality PSU, when it dies, ticks, whines and dies. No dead parts, no smoke..

Hmmm... I like the look of the OCZ stealth 500w with it being on offer especially, I have a PSU with what I've got but it's not so good.

Will this be fine for a Phenom 965, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HD and a 5770 Vapour? Yea a bit different to what I was gonna get, i pushed the boat out a little on this one :)
