Hi,

As above, I will be selling a Dell PowerConnect 2708 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. It was part of a small network of 3 computers and a server and iirc a Dell bloke installed it all for my sister's company back in the day.

Is there any data stored within the switch I should be concerned about? Do I need to reset it to factory settings? Does it hold sensitive information?

As you can tell, I don't have a clue. :D

Cheers.

A switch is a fairly dumb device - it simply passes through whatever data comes into a port, into the other relevant port.

It will neither hold or store any sensitive information :)

You'll be fine to just unplug it, box it up, and sell it :)

A switch like this can hold some very "insignificant" information, nothing that could identify you though. So although it would be nice to clear all the settings, if you do not, there is nothing much to be worried about.

On a side note, how much are you looking to sell it for ? I am in the market for a gigabit switch... Kindly let me know.

If its a managed switch then it comes down to how the organization handles that data. Personally at my work, any switch/router has to be reset to factory defaults before its sent anywhere.

We're also not allowed to ever have hard drives leave our sites except if they are in tiny tiny pieces.
