Hi

Managed to pick up a cheap 8800gtx off the bay.

When I installed it, I get an incredible screeching sound. I take it that my PSU needs upgrading? (not enough power)

Can someone confirm if thats probably what it is? Or am I looking at something else?

Cheers

Silverstone Zeus 520w.

I thought i might be pusing the PSU with this one. May have to look at an alternative. Cant really afford to buy a new PSU.

Cheers - just wanted to make sort of sure that it was probably the PSU.

I think so? Its pretty loud and scares me so I just turn the computer off straight away. May have to plug it back in to confirm.

The 8800 fan does not move, dont think its coming from that.

My 7950gx2 is working fine, I assume this has a lot less power draw.

id say it was a duff 8800gtx if the fan isnt moving.. it should boot up and tell you it needs more power shouldnt it?

Sell the 7950gx2 and buy a new PSU :D .

If you remove the 8800 and replace it with the 7950gx2, does it still make the noise?

550W should be enough, what's your spec?

it may be the 8800 that isnt working properly
check if the fan is spinning and where does the noise come from
if its the psu maybe it cant take the 8800,if its the GTX maybe the fan doesnt work - in that case replace it

There should be 2x 6pin cables that need to be plugged into the 8800

Yep - it was power.

Disconnected my other 2 hard drives, plus my CD roms and fans and all is working OK. No Screeching! I think I am just pushing my PSU to far. 8800 is working fine.

Will just have to use the 7950GX2 until I get a new PSU. (the sale of the 7950GX2, and my old X1900xtx is covering the GTX - no more money for a PSU just yet :( )

Cheers

Edit * One new prob is my board is reporting voltage problems. I suppose this could be lack of power aswell. (Fixed now - Stupid Software!)
