Well on a graphics card you'd usually if your shallow like me, go slightly for looks but XD. No seriously, you want to be looking at its memory size, e.g. 1024MB <- 1GB, 2048MB <- 2GB etc, core clock, memory clock, DX11 support, features and stuff like that. ATI have more processing cores than nvidia however because nvidia run their own CUDA technology so they make up for it. Trust me. :P Another big side to it is the architechture, e.g. 6870 runs the 'Barts' Core. Hope this helps :)

EDIT: Oh and keep an eye out for the memory bandwidth. Shows it's processing power :P

Step 1: Look on Overclockers for cards in your budget.
Step 2: Have a quick look on some of the comparison websites to see which of the ones you've identified are rated highest, here's one I use but other people prefer others: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gamin...n-hd-6870-geforce-gtx-570,review-32094-7.html
Step 3: Decide which games you play the most and look for benchmarks covering those games and the cards you've now narrowed this down to.
Step 4: Now you've narrowed it down to one or two, post on here "I'm going to buy xxxx - what do you think?" and list your games, resolution and PC spec. The guys here will then tell you if another card is due out shortly that'll be a better choice.
Step 5: Buy card!
Step 6: Enjoy.
