Quick Question for a Family Tree

Does anyone know the politically correct term for refering to the dead wife of a man?

Ex-Wife seems insensitive. First wife seems ok, but does anyone have any better suggestions?

We have the most amazing family tree. My uncle worked it out. The thing goes back to the ninth century!

At times though I think it's a bit pointless; at some point in those eleven centuries, someone must have cheated, and everything before them is false.

It's mindboggling to read through. I just wish I knew how much of it was true

I hate to call you a liar pal but I'd eat my own arm if you can show me a genuine family tree going back to the 9th century!
