Quick Question for Sigma lens owners..

Hey guys, quick question before I get paranoid about my new lens being knackered!

I picked up a Canon fit 17-70mm DC OS HSM lens and the testing I've done so far is great.

One thing regarding the internal mechanics of the lens though, after the camera is turned off or it goes into standby, I heard something drop inside the lens. Looking through the viewfinder, it looks to be the glass itself that drops, and raises again when I turn the camera back on.

I'm probably being paranoid, as this is my first HSM/USM style lens I'm not sure if the lens moving in this way is the mechanism inside taking hold off/releasing the lens, but as you can hear the internals shift around when the lens isn't being used (though only very slightly) I'd rather have someone confirm my question, than have a lens that doesn't work quite right.

like above that is almost certainly the OS as it relies on a floating lens element to work, not sure you should here it drop when you turn it off though but thats a popular lens so I'm sure someone will be along to confirm it.
 
I'm pretty sure that it is the OS, the only way to hear it is in a quiet space of course with the camera to your eye, but figured it best to make sure. At least you guys are already thinking along the same lines as I am =]
 
Yeah, sounds like the OS.

My Canon 300mm F4 made quite a lot of noise - discovered it was normal for that lens. Quite a clunk when the stabilisation stoppped and the element shifts.

When you say you can see it drop through the viewfinder does that mean any part of it obscures the view? If you switch the OS off I assume there's no noise and the lens works A-OK both focussing and zooming?

I'll give them a try and see what they say.

@gt when the optics drop the image isn't obscured at all, and when I turn the camera on you see the view raise slowly, just figured it would probably do the same thing when it turned off rather than hearing a little clunk. Even with OS off the lens works fine.. though now you've said that I will have to double check and be 100% sure. I'll be giving it a proper workout this weekend when I'm back home so I can make sure then.

Luckily I bought it from an actual camera store rather than anywhere like Amazon. So if something is wrong with it I can take it back there and get it replaced.

Info straight from the Gooch: "From what you are describing, the operation with the OS system engaging/dis engaging is working as normal."

Can't believe how quick the response was. They replied within 10 minutes of the email being sent. +1 for Sigma support!
