I recently moved all my old hardware after an upgrade into a 2nd machine to use as a server, the plan was for it to be nice and quiet and it is... well apart form the ATI 9800. The little fan on the heat sink is whizzing away at full pelt and cos its only a tiny fan it makes a really annoying high pitched whirring noise that really grates on you after a few minutes.

Anyway since its just ascting as a server and not doing anything graphically intense, I assume it will be ok to unplug the fan and just rely on the heatsink? Yes? I thought i'd better see what others thought first though :)

Might be a little risky TBH.

I'd way underclock it if you definately decide to do it but i don't recommend it.

You'd be better off buying a passive geforce2 or something similar instead.

Definitely not a safe option. Best idea would be to either get a passive card as gt says, or get an Artic Cooling silencer (IIRC it's the revision 3 for the 9800, best to check on that) or other aftermarket cooler.

wouldnt recommend doing that :p

Just have a look on ebay for an arctic silencer you could probably pick one up for around 8 pounds-very nice coolers :)

OK.

Cool. I'll take a ganders. Oh... and sorry this is in the CPU section, should have been GFX, I was sure I put it in there
