Quick question:Is a switch what I need?

Hi there I'm a total newbie when it comes to networks so i got a question. Basically i got an ethernet cable running from my router to the living room where i got 3 devices with ethernet ports that i want to connect for internet access. Will a switch allow me to do that?

you'll need some patch cables if you dont already, to plug the devices into the switch

Do you need a crossover cable to go from router to switch?

I'm guessing not but I'm thinking of doing same as OP

Nope. Crossover cables are for router to router, PC to PC or PC to router connections Traditionally.
But most consumer grade things auto crossover now so they're somewhat a relic of a bygone era
