Quick question: Is AGP 8x backwards compatible?

Just a very quick question.

Can anyone confirm that AGP 8x is usually backwards compatible as I'm hoping to put a newer 8x card into a system with an older motherboard which only supports 4x?

yes, u might need to set the bos to 4x though, dont think its automatic
