am i right in thinking that all brake disks have a finite life span

so if you spent £1700 on a set of massive AP racing brakes (for example) you'd have to buy a new set of discs a couple of years later ? or do these fancy upgraded brakes last longer ..

reason i ask is these look the dogs

http://www.powerstation.org.uk/porsche_brakes.asp

dont fancy having to replace the discs though !

Discs of course have a limited life-span, the length of which depends on how heavy you are with the brakes, and what kind of life they live. My car is due its 2nd set of discs in its 70,000 life, so certainly not a bad life-span.

not thinking for my current car. current car is a bit of a shed and a mode of transport for getting from A to B

i was just browsing around subaru tuning websites, and looking at the costs, and then wondering if uprated brakes require replacing as soon as normal ones. Dont mind replacing standard brakes, but dread to think of the costs of having to replace those AP racing discs on the powerstation Porsche Kit.

Ask them, i imagine its the custom fabrication for the bells and fittings which ramps the price up a bit. Be a few hundred quid for the discs depending on what you get.

Think Carbon Ceramic discs last forever, mind you they make those APs look like a bargain :p

nope they wear out quicker but if u can afford them then u can afford to change them. Buy the kit you want dont worry about the dsks they will wear out but probaly not as quick as the ones at min as your be using the ones u have at min more. Although new disks that big might be pricey. For 280mm stoppers (biggest I can get behind my wheels) you range from £70-£250) 330mm used on DC5's cost £300-£500 for a nice set.

Powerstation are based near me, loads mates trust there scoobies with them. Mate has a 550bhp and everything was done by them(tho it did still have the 155mph limiter on that they never took off) very funny when he was taking me out to show off and we suddenly found out. PMSL (private road of course)

Indeed. Apparently, if your standard brakes are able to lock-up the wheels, then it's impossible to improve them

There is truth in this seeing as ** tyres are only thing that are in contact with the road. BUT better brakes tend not to suffer from brake fade (the main reason I upgraded from a 256mm setup to a 280mm cupra R setup)

You've got to admit that as long as your brakes can lock the wheels up there is little point upgrading for increased braking power alone. For reduced fade, better feel and so on then yes its perfectly right to upgrade them. As others have said though without tyres that can handle the increased forces then there is little point.

On the bike The stock brakes on my Ducati 750SS are enough to lift the back end off the ground with ease so there is no point in upgrading them (to be fair it comes with twin 320mm discs with brembo 4 pot calipers).

Yeah Id never upgrade brakes on my bike, best upgrade you can make is keep using very sticky tyres. I have some dunlops 207R's on my baby

Well yeah, but you don't really upgrade brakes for increased braking torque (unless you have particularly bad brakes), like you said it's for better fade resistance and more consistant reliable braking power.
