I'm looking at getting a Dell XPS15 to pair with a u3415w 34". The laptop has thunderbolt 3 and the monitor normal and mini display ports. They both have hdmi but I'd rather not. Does anyone know if that's doable with a standard thunderbolt to display port cable?

Thunderbolt mashes PCI Express and Displayport signals together so you should be fine with a Thunderbolt - (Mini) Displayport cable. Just make sure it's Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) one one end.
