Quick question regarding new AIO and paste

Hi all,

Just received an OCUK Extreme AIO closed loop and with it came some Thermal Grizzly paste. Thing is, the block has paste already applied (which I assume is Grizzly too??), should I remove this and just use the grizzly as two sets of paste wont be good right?

How is the paste on the block shaped - does it look like it was there from the manufacturer?

Most of the time I remove any default paste and apply my own, you definitely don't want to mix two as that would be too thick of a layer and likely cause it to be less efficient as a mixture.

Are you sure that the paste on the block isn't just the same "Thermal Grizzly" paste that came with it?

It's a circular block and paste is applied in usual circle too. It's OCUK own brand and I also thought it could be the same paste which is partly why I am asking.
In hindsight, I guess a customer service thread would have been better heh.

OCUK wouldn't supply you with Thermal Grizzly paste if they did not think it would be beneficial for you to use it. Their kits come from Asetek, the paste already on the block will have been pre-applied before it got to OCUK and no it won't be Thermal Grizzly.

Well yea, it is kinda obvious they intend for you to use it, but the thread where I saw these advertised, it said they included extra paste for multiple uses so that is what lead me to question the already applied stuff on the block. That and the fact that I know with grizzly they like you to cover the whole CPU thinly. The circular pre-applied patch would only emulate a blob in the middle type application?

Either way, thanks, you have answered my question so I am going to remove it and just apply it to the CPU myself :)

Hi guys, just got the 240mm version of this cooler myself, building my new pc today with a i7 5820k, should i remove the standard paste and use the thermal grizzly or will the standard stuff be ok? What sort of temperature difference are we talking about?

Thanks

Go with the grizzly for sure, hard to say how much better it is than an unknown standard one is but it'll be better I'm sure.

I used some grizzly yesterday on my gpu and lowered the temp 7c over old thermalright chill factor III that had been on there awhile. other people have had results in the same range. Might not see as big a reduction in temps on CPU as GPU but 3-5c perhaps depending what the other paste is.

edit. just seen this, almost identical cpu to yours.

Yea, remove it and just use the grizzly on the cpu. That's what I'm now going to do, with a 5820k too :D
