Short version: Can I use VDU glasses for general use?

Long version: I work with a computer so my company gives me a voucher for a free test and a £45 allowance for a pair of glasses. I currently use glasses (I have myopia and just a bit of astigmatism) so I was thinking in renewing them.

The thing is I can only use that voucher for VDU prescriptions, but taking a look to the internet, if your age is under 45, the glasses should be valid for reading, using screens, focusing at long distances, etc.

I asked about this to the optometrist and at first she told me that VDU glasses are different than the ones I'm currently wearing, but it sounded odd to me so I asked her again before I left the store, and she told me that yeah, I can use the VDU for general stuff.

But I want to double check with you before spending the money...

So, yes, I can use them, right?

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm not British and in my country we don't have such a thing like VDU (we have glasses for myopia, astigmatism, something we call 'tired sight', etc.), so it's a bit confusing :P

you get the vouchers for glasses (whatever type of prescription you need) if you use a VDU (a monitor) for work. They are not specific glasses for using a monitor, so yes you can use them.

Thanks again Abraham. What I don't know is if they are going to deny me the VDU vouvher because I already have myopia. Maybe they can say "hey, you don't need glasses because you work with a computer, you need them because you are shortighted!"

Any experiences?

Working at a computer can make you shortsighted (or make it worse), hence the vouchers for people who sit at computers for a job :)

Edit: Well really the opinion on that seems split I've had a couple of opticians give differing opinions on it but that's the logic behind the contribution anyway.
