Hi all. Just a quick question.

I'm selling something on an auction site and I just got an email asking if they can pay in cash and pickup in person. I don't really have a problem with picking up in person, but I do with the payment, only because there's no 'tracking' involved. Would a written receipt with their signature suffice if they were to be any comebacks?

Or would you just say stuff it and make them pay through paypal and i'll post it?

Thanks.

Did you put 'pick up in person' as an option? If not, tell them to jog on.

well really its better for you :) no posting - another risk.. no paypal - one more risk.. depends on the price of the item really.. if it was some thing under ~70quid i would do it fine. over that i would use paypal/posting for protection really..

If they are paying cash on collection then what's the problem ? I have sold quite a few things off ebay like this. It is only a problem if they pay by paypal and want to collect.

Will almost certainly go for less than that. What's to stop them coming round, picking up, then going back to ebay saying that I didn't post the item or whatever?

It'll just be their word against mine, and I believe they side with the buyer in a lot of these situations.

If they don't pay with paypal then they don't get the buyer protection surely.

Yep. I'd always opt for cash in hand. The only risk as I see it would be that they turn out to be a bruiser and they deck you and take the goods without paying.

take the item of sale and sell it privately? :)

Well what would happen if they did do that? Nothing, you've got the cash in hand.

Theres no possible way you can be ripped off other than him beating you up and taking the item without paying.

Infact this is the safest possible method of selling, for the seller.

Exactly, he can't try and reclaim anything through eBay from you when he hasn't paid you anything through their system.

I've sold a few bits where people have collected from me, including one where I had not specified it as an option. It's no different to selling something in your local paper etc...

All you really need to be sure of is that you get paid with real money and it might be wise to have somebody else at home. Provided the eBayer has a good previous track record, I'm sure you will have no problems whatsoever.
