Hi all 3 questions i hope you BMW people can answer me with

m140 with adaptive suspension(i think??)

any way it has the button to change from sport to comfort and sport +

so sport makes the dampers more firm and makes the engine a 'bit more sporty'

But, pushing the gear stick to the side also makes the engine a 'bit more sporty' And I can press sport and push the stick, or push the stick only, or push the button only.

1. What is the difference between the 4 possible combinations ?

1a. Also, for a bonus, is there any difference between sport+ and sport except the traction thingy? I defo feel like it's even more aggressive and more exhaust burble...

2. I like the heavy steering and improved throttle response when i press the sport button. But i'm not keen on the firmer sus -- is there anyway to make the steering heavier, (and the nicer throttle) but keep the suspension soft?

3. a. related to 1, but does sport mode or S mode literally put more fuel in the engine -> more power ? So it's less economical than comfort even if driving at normal speeds (40-60 mph) ,

3b. conversely if i cruise at 70mph on the m-way. Does it matter a diddly-squat what mode i'm in ? as same speed, --> same economy? Sometimes I like to just leave in in manual, in 8th on the motorway as it can be really aggressive when overtaking, like a auto downshift and max power when I just want a gentle pull in top gear, it's got the torque for it for sure.

Many thanks

no help , but if your that picky and dont like the car, i'll happily take if off your hands :D

i love the 1 series auto i drove that was a courtesy car
sport mode was great :)

yeah it's a great car. love it. fitted ASD harness to it and it's improved it A LOT. Only main quibble is the steering can feel kind of vague in comfort mode if not absolutely spanking it round b roads. And no proper next/prev buttons. The 2 on the head unit suck in their placement and their 'feel'

Had a 340i previously, so similar. Sports modes will use more fuel unless you are careful as it increases throttle response and at the same speed its not necessarily the same RPM? I used to just use comfort or eco for motorways.

I believe sport mode increases throttle sensitivity/response. With adaptive suspension this will also firm up the ride/improve handling. Sport + will then also alter the traction control.
Then pushing the gear stick to the left into S mode alters the shifting points to make it even more responsive and shift more aggressively.

same speed, same gear = same RPM unless I'm missing something fundamental about physics. But even so I wondered if the engine would use more fuel even though same rpm, same speed, same gear because, well frankly I don't know what is going on when i press these buttons hence my questiom

ok, so the switch adjusts the throttle response

move the stick doesn't alter response but changes shift points ? will check this later see if i can see any difference. Or does moveing stick change shift points, and alter response so in this instance the switch does nothing if already in S mode ?

Isnt the stick putting the gearbox in sport mode where as the other is doing it to the engine, suspension etc

Its how its worked on other performance autos I have driven / been in with friends etc

hmm that does make logical sense i suppose yes. so as to what 'sport mode' actually means, in words that can be understood, is that gearbox : changes shift points/ holds gear longer

sport button changes throttle response i.e. engine but what the gear box does is unaffected then ?

sweet. Going to digest this for a while now. but nice post. probably exactly what i was asking for without realising. have an upvote?

are GXX cars 3 series ?

edit and to ask been bothering me for a while now. TRACTION vs DSC what is the difference and when does one kick in and how do they work ?

I had not realised adaptive does not have an intermediate setting, has that always been true ?
is, its soft, then, softer than a non-Msport car, and, the hard, equivalent, or harder than Msport ... or is it more complex ?

Note that for me full DSC off meant comfort mode which isnt quite whats indicated, but apart from that it was right.
Yes, in the M135/140/235/240 turning DSC off completely puts the car back into comfort mode. I couldn't find a way to keep Sports chassis/engine with DSC off, so you either go DSC off and soft steering/long throttle, or Sport+ and only have the traction a bit off.

Stiff is roughly the same as M-Sport suspension, and comfort is roughly the same as non M-Sport suspension. The adaptive dampers in the M cars are different and three settings, with Comfort being about the same as M-Sport in the regular cars and Sport+ being "shake your teeth out" (though in later cars it's retuned and improved).

I guess you mean real M ..... as the chart above showed just two adaptive modes, which is why I posted ....becomes confusing
Of course real M... The others are just regular cars with powerful engines and options that can otherwise be put on any other vehicle in the range. You can specify adaptive suspension on a 118d.

Do the revs not change in the different modes? I’m sure in my car if I flick between eco, comfort and sport the revs change slightly.

If the gearbox is in Sport mode, it will change the behaviour of the transmission which will change the revs. If the rest of the car is in Sport mode, it'll change the throttle mapping which won't change the revs.

Add to that, when you shift the box into sports mode it will rev higher and if you start to use the flappy paddles it will redline (embarisingly)

Also even though i only have a lowly E92 M3, if you change the throttle response you don't have to press the pedal as much to do the same speed. So same revs has to be same speed (unless eco does something funky with the turbo). Nowt wrong with redlining a car, whats the point in not using the whole range.
