Quick Question! Top spec CPUs?

Would I be right in saying that the top spec (current) CPUs at the moment are:

Intel Core i7 990x Extreme Edition

and

AMD Phenom II x6 1100T Black Edition

they are in theory the top spec ones. but preformance for cost its better to go for the i5 or the i7 sandybridge chips

i7 smashes the Phenom hard

although in certain things the new i7 2600K beats the 990X

Meant to say for consumer desktop PCs. I'm not looking to buy, just a little college project. Found these to be top spec for each company. Was just making sure that I wasn't missing anything.

Thought maybe there was a higher spec AMD giving the 1100T's price compared to the 990x's

nope, AMD are budget kings, hence their hexcore is under 300 and the 990X is nearly 1K, but if you've got the money the 990X will smash a Phenom II X6
