I've bought a DVR and it has a VGA output, my TV has just a scart and 2 HDMI ports free. My questions is that would a 'HDMI Male to VGA Male Cable' work on its own, or would I need anything else?
You'll just need to think of audio. If you have audio going to a receiver separately then you're fine but if you don't then you'll need to make sure you have a way of getting it to the TV. Most adapters have a jack input so you can have the VGA + jack > HDMI, how you get to that jack input will depend on the audio outputs your DVR has.
Unless your DVR can output digital video via the analogue RGB socket then you'll need a box of electronics to turn analogue RGBHV in to a digital signal that the HDMI socket on your TV can understand. A cable on its own won't do that. If Overclockers haven't got something suitable then have a look on the Keene web site at this.
What you'll have to check though is that the VGA output on the DVR can be set to a resolution and refresh rate that the TV accepts via HDMI.
