I've got a ROG laptop here with an upgrade to Windows 10 from the Windows 7 it was shipped with. I did the upgrade myself via windows update. Now I need to format my system. But the only o/s I can rollback to is Windows 7. Is there a way of keeping this copy of Windows 10 and using that instead? I haven't a clue how licensing etc is working these days with operating systems. Or do I need to buy myself a fresh copy of Windows 10?

Install windows 10 from USB drive ( can be created using the windows upgrade tool )

Install clean windows 10 and all updates
Use windows 7 key to activate (should be on the CD sticker os on the underneath of the laptop
Profit

The important part is make sure after you install windows 10 that you apply all updates before entering a key.. as far as i know as of three weeks ago the USB image that you can create does not have the update for windows 10 that allowed windows 7/8 keys to activate.. You may actually be lucky as you are not swapping any hardware that you windows 10 will activate once you go online based on the mobo ID.

Yup it's the media creation tool. Alternatively download the ISO instead and use something like Rufus to ensure it's the TH2 ISO.

No need to do that just use the built in wipe feature. It will reset the laptop to as if it was factory fresh.

Absolutely no need to format a windows ten system ever, the reset with and without keeping data options are so much faster.

If you have done be windows 7 to 10 upgrade then as long as you install the correct version (home or pro) it will install and activate without a key. Even if it's the original 10240 version.
