looking at getting new monitor tommorow, however the range to choose from is crap

only 2 they have in stock worth considering is:

Samsung 19" widescreen TFT + TV 1440x900 12ms for £330

or

AOC 27" widescreen TFT + TV 1280x1024 for £450

I think the AOC is a 16ms, would the AOC be ok for gaming or should I go for the samsung?

PS: Cant choose another shop as its voucher redemption :(

The brightness on the AOC is 550cd/m2, which suggests to me it's more of a TV which can also be used as a monitor, rather than the other way round. That's very bright to be using from closer than a few metres away. Anything over about 200 cd/m2 will hurt your eyes after extended use from a distance of <2 feet. Of course it should be possible to turn the brightness down, but that may give you a poor contrast range. 27" is also very big to use as a monitor.

Also 1280x1024 is a very strange resolution for a widescreen monitor. If you run your games in that res, most games will think they're running on a 4:3 monitor and you may well end up with a horizontally stretched image. You'll probably have to select a res like 1280*720 or 1280*768 and have the monitor stretch it to fill the screen, which will make it look a little blurry.

16 ms is quick enough for most people, but you'll certainly get some ghosting/blurring. You will on the Samsung too, but it should be less. At least the Samsung does a proper widescreen res though.

If you are after something to use purely as a PC monitor, I would go with the samsung, assuming it's big enough for you.

Thanks for the reply, I ended up getting a different one:

LG M1910A 19" LCD Monitor + TV 1280x1024 12ms for £250

so far seems good, taking a bit of getting used to though as I've always had CRTs :p
