My friend has given me his computer in order for me to replace his old IDE drive with a SATA drive he is having off me.

Now, would there be any way to copy his old windows install and personal files onto the SATA drive, or would I have to install Windows onto the SATA drive then copy the things he needs from the IDE drive.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there a several progs that would enable you to make an image of the drive and the restore that image to a different drive/type/size I use Acronis true image for backup and also it will do what you ask, not sure if there is a demo version available for you to try.

Another vote for acronis, I found it much nicer than the recent versions of Symantec ghost which is what I used to use.

Should say, the way it works is you can burn it to a cd, boot from that and get a very user friendly user interface and just select "Clone Disk" and it does it all from there pretty much :)
