hey guys,

just assembling my shuttle and was wondering,

how much thermal paste do you put on?
mine doesn't seem to want to spread on that easy, only got a mm layer on atm .. do i need more?

it's being a bit like play doh?

thanks in advance

Take a look here and here for 2 different ways of doing it.
The first way is what arcticsilver recommends if your using Arctic Silver 5 and the second link apply's to most other thermal pastes including the ones you get with the heat sinks.

Just go ahead and take your time over it whichever way you choose to do it, not to little thermal paste but not to much either. A nice thin layer is what you want. :)

Yeah arctic silver 5 is quite a thick paste (if you're using that) and I just found that putting a blob in the middle about the size of a grain of rice and then spreading it with an old credit card works best.

You do have to be quite firm with it though as it's pretty sticky too.

But you shouldn't need any more than that and it should cover the entire top of the cpu.

:)

thanks mate, think the stuff that came with the shuttle was screwed so i'm gonna go get some artic cooling stuff tomorrow, best to be safe rather than sorry i think:)

thanks for your reply

:)

maybe get yourself some TIM cleaner at the same time, even if you're not removing existing compound, its' worth it to give both contact points a thorough going over. :)

cool, cheers lads, you've been a great help:)

the thermal paste that came with the shuttle must have been faulty or something, wouldn't spread right at all...

would you guys do the line method or the totally coating method of application?

Yeah, play doh like doesn't sound right at all, the stuff that came with my old shuttle was pretty much like arctic silver 5.

Well, i've only ever used the blob and then full coating method and I use it because then I know for definate i get full contact between the heat sink and the top of the cpu :)

Not too sure about the line method myself, it could just be easier to spread that way but you'll have to ask someone who has used it :)

once again thanks, gonna go down to the local computer shop tomorrow and get some, think it's better to be safe than wreak a e6600 c2d!!!

:)
