Which offers the best performance and the best upgrade path of these two:

Opteron 146
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI - Socket 939

or

Athlon 64 3400 (Clawhammer)
DFI Lanparty NF3 250GB - Skt 754

I admit I'm well out of touch! Making an emergency purchase of some second hand kit to replace my recently expired PC (may she rest in peace).

thanks

Sols

The Opteron system especially if overclocking. You should with good cooling be able to get that chip running a 3Ghz and so long as you are getting the stuff cheap enough, worth buying.

If not consider a cheap Intel board and an E2xxx cpu. Bang for bucks it beats the AMD system assuming you can find it for similar money.

Oh and one last thing, neither offer any real upgrade path for the future. High end socket 754 cpus are rising in price on the 2nd hand market and the same with Socket 939 cpus. I;m looking at selling my 939 setup and going Intel to make like easier for future upgrades and atm I can get more money for my cpu than what I paid for it 9 months ago.

thanks for the replies - the decision though is now out of my hands, the Opteron having been snapped up.

Still, more than happy as seller is generously meeting me at £37.50 for the Clawhammer/DFI Lanparty NF3 250GB inc HSF - I imagine I'll notice a performance gain over my out going Barton 2800+/ DFI Lanparty NF2 Ultra B
