quick question

im planning on building an i7 system, and thinking of getting either a 4870 or 4870 X2, but I've got a few questions if anyone can help..

Im playing at 1920 x 1080, and i might be upgrading to a 24" monitor later on in the year, would the 4870 be decent for gaming at the res?
and would be 'bottlenecking' my i7 build if i choose the 4870?

Yes the 4870 would be good for gaming at that resolution. I doubt very much you'd be bottlenecking your system with that card or equivalent in mind.

Your CPU being bottlenecked by your GPU? Usually it is the other way around.
Ok, granted that i7s are very powerful, but unless you have overclocked yours to 4.0-4.5GHz, it's not going to be bottlenecked by a GPU.

A 3650 on a 5GHz LN2 cooled i7? Now THAT'S a bottleneck.

What's your budget like? If you have the cash then get the best you can afford. At the res you play on / as well as what you might get, the 24", I'd say don't get anything lower than a 4870 1gb or a 260gtx.

Entirely depends on your budget. One is £160~ and the other is £350~. I'd also look at the 260GTX as suggested.

my budget on my pc is £1k, but if i can go less it's better
I've heard that ati have better value for money than nvidia

They had a big lead in value for money, but recently the prices of the NVidia GTX 260-216 cards have dropped significantly.

The 4870 1GB and the GTX 260-216 are VERY close in performance. It depends on the game/application in a lot of cases.
It's worth mentioning that the 260 is better for people who want to get involved with Folding@Home, as the NVidia client seems to work much better at the moment.

I'm probably not gonna be getting into Folding tbh

if anything it'll be for gaming, photoshop and 3D work

Well then, unless you are going to use CUDA supported apps, then a 4870 1GB would be fantastic.
