I'm putting together a build for a relative, but i don't know if i should go for the 550 BE or the 545. The 545 is stock clocked at 3GHz, which is a nice round number and i don't think they would need to overclock straight away. But the decider is this: is it possible to unlock it? I will be using an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard which from what i've read has the capability to unlock, but i need to be sure about the processor. And yes, i know the risks and the fact that it probably won't work, but it's worth a try is it not?

i would opt for the phenom 2 x2 tbh and just get the thing to 4ghz :D 80£ cant go wrong if it performs the same as the E8XXX's but not the E8600 but still :D

The 550 and the 545 are probably the exact same chip, with the 550 running stable at a higher clock which the 545 failed at.

(Empathisis on the could be)

With £8 difference at the moment, I'd say give your relative value for money, and if they are getting you to build their computer for them, cutting edge performance is not their priority.

The both seem to have the same l2 and l3 cache.
