im not sure if i have the right conections / cables to use the output on my gfx card. if i use the vga on my mobo will the gfx card still be working? thanks

No but you should be able to get a convertor from DVI to VGA which you can plug into your graphics card

didn't your gfx card come with a dvi to vga adapter? if it didn't just go online somewhere, don't pay more that a few quid for it.
