Before I go out and buy another pad is it possible to play the story mode co-op split screen?

Yes but it's slightly different to single player mode.

Unfortunately for "slightly" you should read "all the story ripped out so it's rather naff". Good to play through, but if you want the levels to actually mean anything you'll need to play normal single player
