Quick Ram Question..

I had planned on upgrading my Gpx Card.

But the card i was looking at getting is 1.5GB memory, Since I'm Have 3GB Ram at the moment, I would be wasting 512MB (Aprox) of Video memory. (32 Bit Limitation)

I was looking at upgrading to 64 Bit to compensate for this fact But. 64Bit for 3GB Ram is pointless?

So my options:
Stick to 32Bit, Lose 512MB Video Memory.
Upgrade to 64 Bit, Don't upgrade Ram (4.5GB).
Upgrade to 64 Bit, upgrade Ram...

Now I am currently using
Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition Intel X58
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
Corsair Dominator 3GB (3x1GB) DDR3 PC3-14400C9 (1866MHz) Tri-Channel
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)

On my Graphics card thread they told me to sell my current ram and get 3x 2GB or hunt for some 3x 1G. Why? Could I not have 3x 1GB and then 3x 2GB and have 9GB Ram.

It just seemed wasteful to sell some ram and replace it.

if anyone else out there can put my mind at ease and recommend what choice i should take (and what ram would be most apporiate)

Many thanks

Jamie

Hi there,

Unfortunately you can't run 3x1GB and 3x2GB together and maintain triple channel mode - it would have to run in single channel mode (which you really don't want).

You could buy 3 more 1GB sticks, but this is not as cheap per per GB as buying a 6GB (3x2GB) kit and it means that you have to run two unmatched kits together as well as fully occupying all RAM slots on the board (which puts more strain on the memory controller on the CPU, which limits maximum stable memory speed and CPU overclocking).

All in all it is far more elegant solution is to sell the 3x1GB kit (you will get a good price going by current second -hand memory prices) and buy a 3x2GB kit. Something like this would be ideal, but tbh this would do the job almost as well for much less money.

Obviously this would also require a 64 bit OS. What is the exact version of Window 7 that you bought?

Tyvm for your clear Answer :)

Sorry for the late reply,

I have:

Windows 7 Ultimate - Both 32 and 64 Bit is included.

Genuine Of course :)

Good to hear. In that case upgrading to 64 bit should not be too much of a bother, just make sure you backup your important files before re-installing windows (obviously).

Hey guys, is there a more appropriate place to sell my old ram (I assume its an EBay job) and what should i be looking to get?

Order was:

Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with MAFIA 2 £297.86 1 £297.86
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C8 1600MHz Low Latency Triple Channel (PVT36G1600LLK) £110.63 1 £110.63
Mafia II PC Game Voucher - NVIDIA Promotion £0.00 1 £0.00

Many Thanks,

Jamie

Yea, that is the best place to sell your stuff imho. However, when you get 90 days and 250 posts you will be able to sell stuff on the OCUK members market. There the prices are very fair and there are no fees.

Out of interest, what make/model number RAM did you go for?

The one you recommended as Ideal

Something like this would be ideal

Good stuff, have fun with it -you will certainly have a beast of a computer very soon. Make sure you give that CPU a nice overclock :D
umm I donno if i am comfortable with over clocking...

I know how but I worry about the temperatures.

I'll give it ago but I need to find a proper guide first.

and Thanks for your support and comments, very much appretiated.
