Hi Guys,

I need quick recommendations for a CPU and Mobo around £100

Current system is an AMD Barton 2500 o/c to 3200 for the last few years on an abit NF7-S but temps are now rising to 60 degrees idle. This isn't a problem as im getting a new system but I need to pass this system on to family (not gamers or overclockers) so i figured i'd get a new chip and mobo to give the system more life just needs to take the other present componants...

(AGP) BFG GeForce 6800 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI
2Gb PC3200 Dual Chan DDR memory kit (2x1GB)
IDE hard drive
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 7.1 EAX Sound Card
Window XP SP2

Whats the best bargin bucket stuff at the moment? Just needs to be stable.

Hi ya,

I have an Antec Sonata Piano Black Quiet Case. Ive been running it underclocked to 2500 stock specs for nearly a week but it still idles high in the 60 to 65 degrees range. I've given system a clean up to but only got a small temp reduction. This system will be going to family many miles away from me so I'd be unable to pop over to trouble shoot problems. I prefer the peace of mind of some fresher kit but yes in truth i have not tried a new HSF. Im currently using an Coolermaster Aero 7 Lite. Its been cleaned and seems to be running ok. Any new recommended HSF's to try that fit?

What's the load temps? Don't forget XP's ran hotter. Remember my 2500 Barton @ stock idling around 54° (especially during the summer). Therefore could still be well below max temps :)

Hmmm i'm also in a bit of the same boat, sorry to hijack this thread a little but if someone can answer this then i'll be quiet, but, how easy is it to move over to a new mobo/cpu in a new case? I guess it's not as simple as take everything out, put it all back together again then it'l work I guess? the old HDD would still be searching for the old mobo or what? if anyone can answer this, or link me to a thread about it i'd be very appreciative, and sorry for hijacking this thread a little bit, i'm just in the same boat as you as i'm currently running a 3000+ and the temps are a little too high for my liking to be giving it to someone else :) Many Thanks to whoever can help :p

How about these Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £49.99 +vat and Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB) - £47.99 +vat .The asrock mother board is about the only mother board you can but that will let u use your ddr memory it also has 2 slots for ddr2 memory for future upgrades. It also takes agp and pci express graphics cards.

I see no mention of AGP on that Mobos description? :p or is that AGI Express? :p

You'd normally need (& its highly recommended) a fresh install of Windows. Basically 'features' of mobo would have changed leaving Windows trying to load wrong drivers, etc getting a BSOD at startup :(

Hi hp,

At load its going over 75 degrees which is what i have my mobo warning set to. Do you know the max safe opperating temp for a barton? I seem to remember it was 80 degrees?

wow now thats hot! *L* Maybe it is airflow then or what about heat from the 6800 gfx card?. GFX is not overclocked but its the newest part in the system (bought march 2006). Case fans are clean and working fine. Air out the back of the case is reasonabley cool. Maybe its just the HSF as you say?

Thanks for the recommendations fester :)

Forgot one other thing: Tried removing HSF & re-seating with some fresh thermal compound?

Case fans, should be setup: front intake & back outtake.

But if system's working fine don't you think worrying too-much? We know XP's run hotter & seems people you are giving the rig to will mostly be running it at idle :)

Righteo hp i'll give it a go. My worry comes from the sudden rise in temps over the last few months. Overclocked it used to idle at 40 degrees and rarely passed 60 degrees under heavy load. Now its underclocked to stock speeds it idles at 60 to 65 and quickly shoots passed 75 when under load. A max temp of 85 degrees is nice and high but im still getting uncomfortably close to it. The system is working fine up to the point the mobo alarm sounds *L* I'll raise the warning to 80 degrees and see if it hits it. Good idea on the compound I'll give that a go to.

Thanks for your help all. :)

What temps is the mobo sensor giving for the case?

If your case is cool, and the chip is hot, something is deffo up with you HSF, maybe the aero's fan is on the way out, or the thermal paste is going wrong.

All fixed. Problem was indeed the HSF thanks guys. In my previous clean up i had not removed the fan just cleaned it up in situ. This time i pulled it all apart and at the bottom was a large chunk of dusk (3 years worth :o ) packed quite tightly. Also there wasn't much thermal compound so i cleaned and applied some more. Wacked it all back together and its now running at 45 degrees idle at overclocked 3200+ speeds again :)

Just going to test it a load and see how high the temps go but i think I'll be safer now.
