Just a really quick sanity check.

Is it safe to connect a normal PC to a POE switch?
Google suggests yes, but I thought i'd ask here:)

I'm looking at swapping out a gigabit switch and a 10/100 POE switch for a single POE gigabit one as it would save some power, and more importantly save some space and simplify my network a bit whilst freeing up a mains socket.

Yep to the extent that you can now run a small form factor PC from a PoE switch though it does have to be a PoE++ enabled switch.

I don't think he intends to power it via PoE but just for network connectivity.

This really depends on the switch and/or individual port settings. From my understanding you don't want the port in passive mode - this means the port is always powered/no negotiation. If you plug a non-poe device into a passive PoE port then it could damage the device.

Cheers, what I want to do is use the one switch to power a couple of POE devices, but also connect up a normal desktop and console to it. At the moment the the console and PC are running from a gigabit switch and the cameras are running from a separate 10/100 POE switch.
I'm basically trying to simplify my network and reduce the number of switches etc as it's pretty much grown up with switches added where they've been needed and it's been easier than running new cables.

I've actually just got a a deal on an 8 port gigabit switch with 4 of them as POE ports in the MM which is ideal :)

If you give us switch model, we can give you definite, 100% certain answer. At this moment answer is "95% of PoE switches will detect if device is PoE-hungry or not and will enable it only after receiving that 'gimmie power' communication from end device. Desktops will not send it, hence switch will not provide power to that port, it will remain in network device mode.
Remaining 5% of devices would be China-made, in price range between 5 to 10 pounds, in which case I hope you are smart enough to understand why it is so cheap ;)
