Had a car sorn of the road for awhile, Im now trying to get it back on the road booked in for its Re test on the Mot. How do I go about getting tax etc ?

Once you have a valid MOT certificate, take it, along with your insurance certificate, V5C, and cash, a debit card or your cheque book, to a local Post Office, and ask for 6 or 12 month's road tax.

Go home, put the tax disc in the window, and go drive it.

You are not allowed to drive the car to the Post Office once it's passed it's MOT, only directly back to your house, so you will need alternative transport to get to your Post Office!

Didn't realise about the v5c as when you usually tax your car they send the form in the post. Ok thanks for that. Oh and yes I got another form of transport to get tax cheers :)

You can drive without an MOT as long as you are on your way to a pre-booked MOT. Just drive home via a post office and take your V5, insurance docs and MOT certificate with you so you can tax it. Thats what I did last week.

Except if you get caught in the post-office car park without a valid tax disc then you could get a fine...

Just had a thought, I own the car but Im giving it to my mum so can she get tax on it still with her insurance certificate but my name on the v5c ?

Depends on who serves you. The car is MOT'd & insured, but some of the staff get arsy if the names don't match. Had one old baggage who made me fill out the new owner slip on a car registered to my wife before she'd let me tax it with my insurance..

So i did so. With a fountain pen ;)

I had to jump through hoops before I was allowed to pay £15 to tax a motorbike that was insured by me but owned by my mother. Other times I've handed over insurance docs for the wrong car/expired cover notes by mistake and still been given tax.
