Quick spec check please :)

Am thinking of getting the following:

Intel I7 875K CPU
Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe mobo
8gb (4 x 2Gb) of Corsair Dominator 1600 C8 RAM

but reading around I'm not too sure if I shouldn't be going for something like the i7 950 CPU and x58 mobo.

Use will be some mild gaming (going to also get an ATI 5830 vid card), the rig will be more used for video editing, processing and encoding.

I'll obviously be trying to overclock any setup I get so would be really interested in what the 2 CPUs above would perform clock for clock.
 
For the kind of money you would be paying for that cpu, and memory, id personally go for the X58 set-up.

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel £117.49 inc VAT

So i would say a close enough cost between the 2. All that 875K offers really is an unlocked multiplier, but without very very good cooling that is wasted. And the 950 will easily goto 4ghz+ comfortably on air. You could even save about £20 and get the 930 instead.

Also about the 5830, for that price id say the newer GTX 460 1gig will be better to get.

Apart from Dual Gb.LAN the deluxe/premium Mobo doesn't offer much more for your £.
Make sure you add yourself a nice cooler onto the combo.

That's what I sort of gleamed when reading around the forums here. The thing about the above x58 mobo is no eSata which is a must have for me. The Gigabyte UD3R has all that I require but again reading around this board seems to have a load of boot and memory issues which I'd rather do without.

Didn't realise the GTX 460 was a better option so will include that in my list, thanks.
 
So I'm now going to go for the EVGA GTX 460 overclocked and I save a few quid in the bargain but can anybody help with the mobo, x58 with USB3, SATA3, eSata and firewire. budget around £175.

Does the Gigabyte UD3R still have problems with picking up all the RAM on cold boot?

After some more reading as far as I can tell the problems with detecting RAM on the Gigabyte mobos looks like it's been fixed so latest thinking is the X58A-UD5 with an i7 950 CPU.
