Just thown the following spec together for a workmate. Any thoughts?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit
Samsung SpinPoint P HD080HJ 80GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM
Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case - 500W PSU
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Noctua NF-S12 800RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pin

Grand total (ex delivery) £568.61

He says he's not bothered about a DX10 card so I reckon for the price he cant go far wrong with the 512mb X1950.

Cheers :)

edit: its just for general surfing/WOW & catching up on the last 3 -4 years of games (ie Oblivion) etc -he will upgrade to a better card later

maybe up the fan from 800 to the 1200 version but aside from that looks fine.

okidoki good point. I didn't notice it had a U.L.N.A. included with the 1200 version.

It looks good although I might be tempted to go for a larger hard drive as 80gb isn't all that much. :)

Yeah that's what I thought but he reckons he won't need it -I might suggest the 160gb drive instead though cos it's still damn cheap imo.

depends what he uses it for really, bear in mind the likes of the seagate 250gb has 16mb cache (£46.99)

I don't know how much WoW and Oblivion take up but my Half Life 2 folder (for instance) is 11gb+ on its own and that is with only Half Life 2 and its variants installed so I'd go for 160gb as a minimum as it only costs about £5 more for double the space. :)

I also agree with a harddrive increase, when i bought this 200gb harddrive i would never have thought i would need more than 50gig, but now here i am constantly having to clear things out!

In my new build def. gonna go for a 500GB harddrive, wont need THAT much but its good to know the space is there when needed, whereas 80GB nowadays will do a few games at best.

hmm :( apparently this is about £100 more than he wants to spend. He says he's got a maximum of about £450 -480. I'm trying to persuade him to just save up more but can anyone perhaps spec something in his current price range?

Bit closer to the budget at least and no real loss in functionality plus a 160gb hard drive and optical drive into the budget since one was missing before. :)

Cheers mate that looks much better price-wise :D

That 430W PSU will be ok for the GFX card will it? I thought the ATI cards are power-hungry or am I thinking of the older X1900s?
