Quick structures question

Hey OcUK,

I'm just attacking a Christmas assignment involving making a presentation to teach the fundamental concepts of stress and strain. However, the only other instruction I have had is to 'make sure you cover plane stress and plane strain'.

Now I've begun my research but the vast majority of documents mention 'direct stress', few mention 'plane stress' and none I have found so far have offered an explanation of the difference.

So to anyone who knows a great deal about civil, are these terms synonymous or if not, could you draw a brief picture of the differences? It's a bit of a boulder to understanding the rest of the material.

Unless you are making specific reference to stress and strain in different planes of a material? E.g. Timber, relative to the grain etc or lateral and vertical plane.
