Quick Tyre Wear Question

Hi All

The outside edge of my front passenger side tyre is lacking tread. The middle 3/4 of the tyre is fine i think from a legal point of view however is it safe to keep driving on or should i get a new front set?

along with sorting the tracking/alignment out :D
 
I thought wear lower than the minimum legal depth was ok so long as it wasn't more than 1/3 of the overall width?

Or something like that. :o

That is not the entire law though as I found out last year to the cost of £65 and 3 points :(

The actual law is that 75% of the tyre must be above the legal limit of 1.6mm but there must be visible tread across 100% of the tyre. I'd worn the outer edge completely smooth and was driving around on illegal tyres while mistakenly thinking I was okay because of the 75% rule.

I was on the understanding that the 'Average' over the entire tread had to be 1.6mm. However, do you really want to be going round a round-a-bout with the outside of your inside tyre worn in the rain? No thanks! :P

No, It's illegal once any part of the middle 3/4 measured from the extent of the side walls is below 1.6mm.



@ OP:

I would sort the tracking out then change the tyre.

If the tracking is out enough to scrub a tyre outside the middle 3/4 then you surely must have felt it in the steering.

whats a decent tyre thesedays? kinda tempted to replace all four, but theres nothing wrong at all with the rear two
 
Depends on your milage or how often you want to change them. A good tyre in the wet and dry woudl be the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 however is made from a soft compound so dont expect to be able to do 20-30k on it :)

i dont do huge mileage. 6-7k a year average

would it be ok to whack two eagle f1`s on the fronts and leave the older contisports on the rear?
 
Basically speaking I refuse to **** about when it comes to tyres.
At any given time you've got on average the equivalent of four hand-palms of rubber touching the road and that is it.
For that reason as soon as things start getting worn to the point you're describing I'd have those things off and a pair of new tyres fitted.

Tyres aren't the cheapest things in thw world - but they are life savers.

Usually you'd put the new tyres on the rear and swap them over once the fronts needed to be replaced.

Speaking as the owner of a set: They aquaplane less and leave a clean line around your wheel-arch, where the massive groove down the middle collects surface water.

No, it means everyone thinks they are crap. Becuase they are.

The only time I've ever had proper scary Aquaplane in a car, it was fitted with P6000's. They are godawful.
 
I know I do not use exactly the same tyre but the Pirelli P7's I have on my Accord are horrific in the wet. I mean Arrowspeed special bad!!! I wish I had either just put budgets on it or gone the whole hog and got some hydragrips
